Three Oscar Nominations To Watch With The Family
Get out the popcorn and settle down in front of the TV with some great family entertainment.
As always, this year's Oscar nominations have caused much talk and controversy. Behind the headlines, it went largely unnoticed that many high-quality, family films were included. With streaming services like Netflix understanding the inherent value of all ages content, some fantastic pieces were presented. Below, we give you three of this year's Oscar nominations to watch with the family.
According to ExpressVPN’s flowchart on which Oscar movies you should watch based on your preferences, Avatar is an excellent choice for everyone seeking for an epic and uplifting spectacle. For those who enjoy it, and have already seen the first movie, they also recommend the classic Ferngully: The Last Rainforest. An underrated movie, Ferngully had similar themes concerning nature and the destruction of the planet's ecology. Ferngully won the award for best visual effects, and it’s definitely worth your time.
When James Cameron produces a movie, you know it is going to be something special. The sequel to his hugely popular Avatar movie, this feature has been over ten years in the making. The action focuses on returning main lead Jake Sully, who is now the leader of the Omatikaya clan. However, as they face new threats they begin to explore new regions of Pandora and soon relocate to the coast. When an ancient threat emerges, they must then repel it and find peace once more.

The Sea Beast is a Netflix-funded movie, nominated in the category of the best-animated feature film. The story is about a fictional 17th-century trade in which sailors venture out and hunt famous sea beasts. One group is threatened with replacement due to their inability to catch the fabled Red Bluster and set out on one last attempt to prove their worth. Maisie, a stowaway on the ship is eaten and taken to the beast's island where she finds out they are just misunderstood.
Karl Urban stars as Jacob Holland, one of the main hunters and he plays a spectacular part, torn between his human nature and the need to keep his business going. Written by Chris Williams, his previous accolades include Big Hero 6 and Bolt, both classic family features.
At its core, Pinnochio has always been a dark tale. Given a shiny, family-friendly makeover by Disney, Pinnochio's themes were still evident for all to see. This makes it the perfect subject for Guillermo Del Toro, who is a master at mixing children’s tales and fantasy fables with darkness and the eerie. Therefore, if your children are spooked easily you may wish to check this out alone beforehand.
Another Netflix-funded project, this stop-motion animation reimagines the tale of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet that is brought to life. It is set in fascist Italy during the interwar period, revisiting themes Del Toro explored in his famous Pan’s Labyrinth. As Pinnochio grapples with his understanding of life, he does so through the lens of troubled times.
There are other exciting Oscar-winning movies you probably missed that are worth your time. Make sure to check them out!
